September 05, 2011 11:30 am | Updated 11:30 am IST - KOCHI:

Even as the district Health authorities claim that Hepatitis A situation reported from some areas of Kothamangalam taluk is under control, one more case was reported from Kadavoor in Paingattoor grama panchayat on Sunday.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Sukumaran will visit the district on Monday to study the situation.

On Saturday, six Hepatitis A cases were reported from Kadavoor and one from Neriyamangalam while five cases were reported from Kadavoor and two from Piravom on Friday.

Field visits by the Health authorities had revealed contaminated well water as the source of Hepatitis A in the hilly terrain of Kadavoor, where pit toilets are still in use, which could be contaminating open wells.

Nine out of the 10 wells tested by the Health staff were found to be contaminated.

Four deaths so far

Four people had so far died of complications due to Hepatitis A.

Many people who had consumed toddy from local toddy shops had reported with Hepatitis A. Initially, except one woman, all others who were reported with the disease were men.

However, the authorities were unsure whether suspect quality toddy or the water served in the toddy shops was contaminated.

So far about 85 people in the area have shown symptoms of Hepatitis A and 15 cases have been confirmed till Thursday.

The Epidemiologist will speak to the patients to reassess the evidence gathered by the district Health authorities.
