In a high voltage drama, a 22-year-old man, accused in a murder case, escaped from police custody in North Paravur on Wednesday.
Officials said the incident took place at around 8.30 a.m when Shamnas of Alappuzha, an accused in a murder case at the Venmani police station in Alappuzha, pushed one of the two policemen accompanying him and took to heels. The police tried to give a chase but he disappeared.
Confirming it, T.V.Shibu, Sub-Inspector of police, North Paravur said, “the Venmani police team informed us about the escape half an hour after the incident. It is a subject of investigation how the accused managed to escape from custody’’.
As soon as Shamnas escaped, the persons arrested along with him were immediately shifted to a covered police vehicle. The police team, comprising an additional sub-inspector and three civil police officers, had picked up Shamnas from Kannur along with two others late on Tuesday and were on their way to Venmani station in Alappuzha. Shamnas escaped when they stopped for breakfast at North Paravur.
Following the alert, a local police team launched a manhunt in the area but to no avail. “Despite searching the area for about three hours, we were unable to trace him. An FIR has been filed and a follow-up probe is on’’, the official added.
