About 38,069 seats are available for Plus One programmes in schools across Ernakulam in the new academic year.

The intake under the merit category in the government, aided and unaided categories is 24,546. Nearly 4,422 seats are available under management quota. The intake under community quota is 3,312 while the seats available under unaided category is 5,789.

Officials associated with the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education said there were adequate number of seats to accommodate all students eligible for higher studies in Ernakulam.

99.12% pass

The district had achieved a total pass percentage of 99.12 to top the SSLC results this time.

Of the 33,074 students who wrote the exam, 32,784 became eligible for higher studies.

In 2017-18 academic year, the total intake for Plus One courses (including Plus One and other programmes) was about 44,062. Nearly 2,930 seats were available under the vocational higher secondary programmes. The intake for streams such as ITI and polytechnic was 3,063. About 10,000 seats (including all streams) had remained vacant last year. The vacancy position for the regular Plus One programmes was 4,533 in 2017-18.

Officials said the vacant seats arose as majority of the students opted for certain schools only on a general basis, leaving many seats in other schools vacant. Even though seats are available, the allotment will not take place as the candidate may have not opted for that school.

Single-window system

The seats available under the government and aided (merit) quota will be filled through the single-window system.

The allotment will be made from the central pool in Thiruvananthapuram.

The selection of students for the Plus-One level will be based on the guidelines prepared by the State Council Educational Research and Training (SCERT). The total marks scored by the student along with the marks in the subject in which they had applied for will be considered for admission. Each grade has been given a point. A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C+ = 5, C = 4, D+ = 3.

The admission will be based on the Grading Point Average (GPA) scored by each student. GPA is calculated by dividing the total points by the total number of subjects (10). In the next stage of the selection process, the average of total points in all 10 papers and average for the subject applied for will be added together to find out the Weighted Grade Point Average (WGPA).
