MGU mulls implementing on-screen marking system

Mahatma Gandhi University is mulling over a proposal to introduce digital evaluation of answer sheets to check tabulation errors and speed up publication of results.

The varsity has roped in the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (Keltron) to roll out its on-screen marking system.

“They had conducted demonstrations of the software to be used for the digital evaluation process. A decision on the phased implementation of the digital marking system will be taken after wider consultations, to be held with teachers and employees,” said N. Jayakumar, Syndicate member and convener of the examination committee. The move to introduce the on-screen marking system came after the varsity received brickbats for a series of goof-ups and errors in the evaluation of various examinations over the last one year and more. The on-screen marking system starts with the scanning of the answer sheets within the institution premises once the process is over.

The electronic scripts will be transferred to the varsity’s data centre, which hosts the marking software. The answer sheets will be made available to evaluators through internet in secure mode. They will do the marking on screen and convert it into PDF format.

The system will capture the marks awarded and the comments made by the evaluator before tabulating the final scores automatically. The evaluated answer scripts will be stored in the digital format and the varsity can retrieve and share it anytime as per the requests made by the students officially. The varsity authorities hope that the process of sharing answer sheets among the multiple evaluators will turn easier with the on-screen marking system. The technology also enables real-time monitoring of evaluators.
