Government Medical College, Ernakulam, will be on par with any super specialty hospital in the vicinity, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

He was speaking after inaugurating the catheterisation laboratory (cathlab) and laying the foundation stone for the mother and child super specialty complex at the medical college on Sunday.

The ₹285.31-crore project will be spread in eight storeys in around 8 lakh square feet area. The complex will have 14 modern operation theatres, 112 beds in the intensive care unit, and facilities to house all super specialty departments.

The work, being executed by Inkel, is expected to be completed by December 2020. The Chief Minister said with the medical college offering modern facilities, hospitals in the vicinity would be forced to bring down the costs of medical care.

Health Minister K.K. Shylaja presided over the function. K.V. Thomas, MP, MLAs V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, P.T. Thomas, Anwar Sadat, and Hibi Eden, District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla, Kalamassery municipal chairperson Rukhiya Jamal, and Medical Education Director Ramla Beevi were among those present on the occasion.
