The faculty at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, have decided to intensify their stir to a total academic strike from January 15 onwards if the meeting on Friday called by the Director, Medical Education, fails to satisfy their demands.
The teachers at the medical college had been on an academic boycott for nearly two weeks without affecting the practicals and examinations of the students. However, since the government has turned a blind eye to their demands, the teachers have decided to totally boycott the academic activity.
The hospital functioning would not be affected, said Jacob Baby, president of the Cochin Medical College Teachers’ Association.
The students union held a protest in front of the administrative block of the medical college on Wednesday asking the government to step in to ensure the smooth functioning of the college. The students demanded that the government consider the just demands of the faculty so that the teaching was not affected in the college.
Later, the students and the teachers also held a meeting with Principal Dr. Praveenlal K. and Special Officer Junaid Rahman.
‘The hospital functioning will not be affected.’
