There is no better time to revisit the Constitution and the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority (KSLMA) plans to do just that by rolling out certificate courses on the Constitution in the near future.

Lessons on Constitution may also find their way into the textbooks of KSLMA’s equivalent courses up to the higher secondary level shortly.
To begin with, the KSLMA has launched a two-month-long people’s campaign for Constitution literacy across the State on November 26, observed as National Constitution Day. The campaign will last till Republic Day next month.
“Prevailing circumstances in the country are what prompted us to think about a campaign on Constitution. Besides, we felt that for a highly literate society, awareness on Constitution was rather limited in Kerala. The campaign aims at giving minimum awareness about our Constitution to around 50 lakh people spread across 21,000-odd wards in the State,” KSLMA director P.S. Sreekala told The Hindu .
Training programme
Ms. Sreekala on Friday inaugurated a training programme in Kochi for KSLMA district coordinators from across the State on how to go about the Constitution literacy programme.
These coordinators will train district-level instructors and resources persons, who, in turn, will train local body and ward-level resource persons.
The KSLMA plans to rope in around 60,000 participants of its tenth and higher secondary-level equivalent courses and each of them will conduct classes on Constitution for at least 15 persons. This is in addition to the more than one lakh resource persons who will be deployed across the State.
The KSLMA aims at giving basic knowledge about the Constitution with more in-depth lessons reserved for the proposed certificate courses, which may be rolled out as a continuation of the Constitution literacy programme.
“We have brought out a 20-page booklet as part of the programme with the objective of giving an idea about the Preamble and the important articles dealing with the fundamental rights in our Constitution. An hour-long session will be held to cover the topics,” said Ms. Sreekala.
