: Port workers under the aegis of different trade unions have threatened to go on strike against what they called a decision by the Cochin Port Trust to “outsource” manning and maintenance of floating craft deployed by the port authority for various operations.

The port authority has invited bids from manpower suppliers for manpower for operation and maintenance of floating craft of the Marine Department. The tender is scheduled to close on May 19.

Trade union sources said the employees had served a notice of strike on or after May 14.

They said the Assistant Labour Commissioner had convened a conciliatory meeting on May 14 in view of the strike notice. Leaders of the employees’ unions will make their stand clear on the issue during the meeting.
