June 30, 2014 01:09 pm | Updated 01:09 pm IST - KOCHI:

The 20th annual general body meeting of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) held here on Sunday decided to retain actor Innocent, Chalakudy MP, as its president.

Proposal turned down

Earlier, Mr. Innocent had expressed his willingness to step down saying that his commitments as an MP would come in the way of discharging the duties as the organisation’s president. However, the meeting turned down the proposal and asked him to carry on for another one year till the expiry of his term as president.

The meeting on Sunday also decided to double the membership fee to Rs.1.01 lakh to ensure that only genuine artistes become its members and help meet the cost of insurance for its members and financial aid to poor artistes.

“From this year onwards, we are also helping the family of deceased actors, starting with Cochin Haneefa. The education expense up to college level of their children would be met by the association,” Mr. Innocent said.

Other major issues that came up for discussion included the case of two actors, both children of well-known artistes, who were yet to take membership in the association.
