Monday blues turned especially worse for city folks as life almost came to a standstill with many low-lying areas remaining literally under water for good part of the day.
Travelling public were caught off guard with both south railway station and KSRTC bus stand looking more fit for ferry service.
Even the station master’s cabin at the bus stand was inundated as officials were found sitting on the table to avoid knee-high water. Passengers felt more like on an island as taxis and autorickshaws avoided the railway station and the bus stand. KSRTC suspended services to high range areas and to Changanassery as the Alappuzha-Changanassery Road was literally flooded. Only sporadic services were operated to Mulanthuruthy and Piravom.
With private buses also suspending services to the hilly terrain, passengers were left stranded. A good portion of M.G. Road remained under water while Karikkamuri Cross Road taken by passengers to and from the South railway station owing to Kochi metro work also experienced unprecedented flooding with water entering many houses and vehicles parked outside. With autorickshaws and taxis avoiding the road, passengers had a nightmarish time having to keep the luggage from getting drenched while wading through water.
The situation was especially worse along the Vyttila stretch where the ongoing flyover work added to the problem.
Fire and rescue and KSEB personnel had a tough time attending to the flood of calls, seeking their intervention on uprooted trees and snapped power lines.
