The furniture at a flat in Panampilly Nagar was gutted after sandal sticks fell on a mattress on Thursday around 6 a.m.

The incident took place in a flat on the fifth floor of an apartment complex on Vidyanagar road. It took the fire and rescue services officials around an hour to douse the fire.

According to fire force officials, initially, the fire was noticed by the occupants of the flat the previous night and they had doused it before going to sleep in another room. However, the fire continued to smoulder and spread to the bed and other appliances.

Timely act

The concrete in the room was almost in molten state when the fire fighters arrived. “Had we not doused the fire in time, it could have assumed serious proportions,” said a fire force official.

A team led by assistant station officer Suresh P.K. and comprising of ASTO (grade) Sivakumar T.C., firemen Rojomon, Aneesh P.A., Ramraj R., and Sibi B. doused the fire.
