The second fire accident in less than three months was reported from the Alleppey Spinning Mill at Kareelakulangara near Kayamkulam here on Friday.

The fire broke out at around 8.30 a.m. and workers who were inside the drench noticed the smoke first. They immediately raised an alarm, following which five Fire and Rescue units from Kayamkulam, Karunagapally and Mavelikara were pressed into service. Fire-fighters had to battle with the flames for over three hours to douse the fire.

Initial estimates of the damage are yet to be released, though employees said the loss could be in lakhs. A similar fire accident was reported from the same mill on February 22, when the loss was estimated to be over Rs.1 crore.
