Thursday was a day of mixed fortunes for both the LDF and UDF in two local bodies of the district where no-confidence motions were taken up for consideration.
While the LDF succeeded in voting out the UDF-led civic administration in Kumbalam panchayat, it lost out to its political rivals UDF in Vengola panchayat in Perumbavoor.
In Kumbalam, the LDF managed the support of a Congress councillor, an independent one and a BJP councillor in voting out the UDF president Sherly George and vice president Sreejith Parakkadan. V.A. Ponnappan, a Congress councillor, C.T. Ratheesh, BJP representative, and T.R. Rahul, the independent councillor, voted in favour of the no-confidence motion. In Vengola panchayat, the UDF ousted the LDF-led civic administration with the support of an LDF councillor and two independent councillors.
Dhanya Leju of the LDF was the head of the civic administration.
It was the support of Swathi Rejikumar, an LDF councillor, and two independent candidates that proved critical for the UDF as they shifted their allegiance from the LDF to the UDF. The no-confidence motion was taken up for consideration in the presence of police as the no-confidence motion that was considered earlier ended up in commotion.
