Risky passage: The entire width of Church Road on Thammanam-Palarivattom Road has been dug up by the Kochi Corporation for constructing a culvert.

Residents and commuters at Church Road on the Thammanam-Palarivattom Road are having a harrowing time owing to the blocking of the entire width of the busy stretch for the construction of a culvert.

The situation is such that even pedestrians cannot cross the work site easily.

“The contractor is apathetic to the plight of the road users, including children of a school nearby who cannot even safely walk along the stretch. The situation has been worsened by the Kochi Corporation’s inordinate delay in completing the work,” said M.R. Martin, a resident.

A visit to the work site showed vehicles, unable to proceed further, returning to the main road, and pedestrians walking on narrow wooden logs that were tied together and kept at one end.

Councillor Jesssy Jacob, who represents Division 44 (Karnakkodam), said the work suffered delay as a couple of pipelines laid beneath the road broke during construction. “The culvert is being built to prevent flooding in a colony which has over 100 houses. We hope to complete the work soon,” she said.
