It is status quo ante now, says Deputy Mayor

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Mullappally Ramachandran on Saturday brushed aside the question of leadership change in the Kochi Corporation, maintaining that such an issue was not under the consideration of the committee.

Asked by television reporters about Congress councillor Shiny Mathew staking claim to the Mayor’s post citing a previous internal understanding within the party that Mayor Soumini Jain would step down after heading the corporation for two-and-a-half years, Mr. Ramachandran said the issue was not being discussed right now.

“The matter will be looked into when such an issue comes up,” he added.

Deputy Mayor and district Congress president T.J. Vinod said it was status quo ante at the moment and that no fresh development had taken place on Saturday.

Ms. Mathew, however, told The Hindu that she had not met the party State president on Saturday as it was not needed.

“The leadership change was something that had been agreed upon already. So, there is no need to take it up any further. It will happen on a date fixed by the party,” she said.
