After hours of search carried out jointly by the scuba team of the fire and rescue services and divers of the Navy, the body of a man who went missing in the Chilavannoor canal on Sunday was fished out Monday evening.

The deceased was identified as Jenice Ernest, 23, of Kammattipadam. The fire and rescue and Navy personnel were engaged in the search since he had gone missing.

According to fire force officials, the body was recovered a few metres from the spot where he had gone missing. It was a tough task for persons engaged in the search as they had to retrieve the body trapped inside heavy slush. There were unverified reports that the youngster had attempted to the swim across the slush-filled canal after he had a bet with his friends.

A case was registered at the Ernakulam South police station for unnatural death.
