The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an organisation of bank employees’ bodies in the country, has called for a bank strike on December 19.

The forum is demanding wage revision and stoppage of banking reforms.

The decision to strike work was taken at a meeting held in Chennai recently.

The meeting discussed reform policies of the government in the banking sector, according to UFBU representatives.

It noted that the process of wage negotiations had started more than a year ago and urged Indian Banks’ Association to expedite settlement.

The bank employees’ unions are opposed to various reforms being initiated by the government and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the banking sector.

The reforms include move to allow foreign banks to take over Indian banks.

The unions are against the move to grant of licences to open private and foreign banks under New Bank Licensing Policy.
