All-party meet to discuss alleged irregularities on voters’ list

Reorganisation of polling booths done on basis of political considerations. Many voters ecluded from the list

June 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:37 am IST - Kochi:

In the wake of allegations of irregularities on the draft voters’ list pertaining to the district, Collector M.G. Rajamanickam has asked the secretary of the City Corporation to convene an all-party meeting to address the issue.

The Deputy Director of Panchayats, in the meantime, will coordinate with electoral registration officers in municipalities and panchayats to rectify errors before finalising the electoral list for the local body polls in October.

The move comes after the CPI(M) cried foul, alleging that the draft list released by the State Election Commission on June 1 had several discrepancies.

District secretary of the party P. Rajeev said reorganisation of polling booths was done on the basis of political considerations and alleged exclusion of many voters from the list.

State Election Commissioner K. Sasidharan Nair, however, maintained that the draft list also incorporated voters registered with the Central Election Commission up to a qualifying (cut-off) date. “In a week’s time or so, we will have the website,www.lsgelections.kerala.gov.infully operational. The site, whose security audit is under way now, will provide for verifications, corrections and inclusion of voters,” he told The Hindu .

Mr. Nair said the reorganisation booths and wards would have thrown up a few issues. “But those who don’t figure in the published list could register online on the election website and appear for hearing at their local body on the eighth working day of application. Attestation of photo in respect of those who haven’t uploaded it online besides verification of documents will be done at the local body. The document issued there could be used to prove identity for voting. Online registration will be open till September,” he said.
