: The controversy over culling of stray dogs is all set to end finally with, Jose Maveli, chairman of the stray dog elimination group on Wednesday announcing his plans to withdraw from killing these animals.

Mr.Maveli has handed over a letter in this regard to Ernakulam Rural SP Yathish Chandra. “I am withdrawing from the plans of eliminating stray dogs as I realise that it is not the right way to counter the menace and here by submit my unconditional apology for committing the act’’, the letter stated. He, however, has vowed to continue his fight and will seek legal options to check the menace. “Further action on the issue will be initiated as part of the Dog Population Management and Animal Birth Control Programme’’, it added.

The step comes even as the State Human Rights Commission has asked the State police chief to submit a report on how to counter the issue. Earlier, Maveli had led the movement to cull stray dogs in Ernakulam, which drew intervention from the Animal Welfare Board of India.
