A 55-year-old woman on a two-wheeler was crushed to death after she was run over by a lorry on the National Highway-47 near Mararikulam early on Monday. Her husband and grand-daughter also suffered grievous injuries in the accident.

The woman, Omana, a resident of Mararikulam North, was pillion riding with her husband, Sukumaran (62), with their grand-daughter, Sandra (10), sitting in-between them. A speeding lorry hit the two-wheeler near the Kalithattu Junction around 6.45 a.m., and dragged the bike for a few metres. While Omana was crushed to death on the spot, the rear wheels of the lorry ran over Sandra too. Sandra was first taken to the Alappuzha Medical College and later shifted to a private hospital in Ernakulam. Her condition was stated to be critical.

Sukumaran also sustained serious injuries and was shifted to the Cherthala Taluk Hospital.

They were returning after visiting Omana’s daughter at her home near Thanneermukkom.
