SPCA may launch suo motu proceedings

July 31, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 18, 2016 05:06 pm IST - KOCHI:

State Police Complaints Authority (SPCA) K. Narayana Kurup on Saturday condemned the police brutality against media persons in Kozhikode, terming it an assault on the country’s constitutional fabric.

“The police were definitely wrong in taking the law into their hands, treating media persons as terrorists and assaulting them,” Mr. Kurup said here on Saturday.

“In a country governed by rule of law, the media definitely hold a pre-eminent position and such attacks on the Press cannot be countenanced. To the best of my knowledge, the court had enforced no ban on the media on its premises. That being the case, it is out of bounds for the police to mete out such brutal treatment to the mediapersons,” Mr. Kurup said.

Mr. Kurup spoke of the plans to launch a suo motu probe into the incident once the authority got an independent investigation officer.
