October 29, 2009 05:23 pm | Updated 05:23 pm IST - KATTAPPANA:

The United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Jessy Antony of Kerala Congress (M) was elected chairperson of the Thodupuzha municipal council on Thursday. The election was necessitated by the resignation of Sheeja Jayan of the Congress on October 6 as per an agreement in the UDF.

In the 32-member council, 21 votes were polled in favour of Jessy Antony. The Left Democratic Front candidate Jessy Johny of Kerala Congress (Joseph) got seven votes. Two votes were declared null and void and two members abstained from voting. In the municipal council where the UDF has a clear majority, the present vice-chairman will also resign in favour of a Congress candidate in the rest of the one-year period of the present council.
