Around 200 national and international delegates will participate in a two-day International Symposium on ‘Remote Sensing and Fisheries’ here from February 15 to highlight case studies using Earth observation data, with contribution from key fisheries systems around the world.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, Dr. B. Meenakumari, Director, Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT), said the symposium would address themes like operational use of remote sensing for fish harvesting and earth observation ecosystem indicators to assess fish health and growth.
It would also address implications of climate change on fisheries, use of remote sensing in aquaculture and remote sensing applications in management of coastal zones and fisheries.
She said remote sensing of ocean colour could be used to monitor water quality as a tool in coastal-zone management. It is also used to identify potential fishing zones, allowing fishermen to work more effectively and economise on fuel.
The symposium is being jointly hosted by CIFT and Societal Applications in Fisheries and Aquaculture using Remotely-sensed Imagery (SAFARI).
