Driver charged for passing lewd comments on woman

KOCHI: The Ernakulam North police on Thursday took an autorickshaw driver into custody on the charge of making lewd comments on a woman media professional.

The accused is Rajeeb, 25, a resident of Shanthipuram Road at Thammanam. The vehicle bearing registration number KL-17 J 1940 was also taken into custody.

Police said the accused had been charged under Section 119 (a) of the Kerala Police Act for gestures degrading the dignity of women. He was later released on bail.

The incident took place on Kairali Street near Ashoka Road at Kaloor on Thursday around 2.30 p.m. The accused reportedly stopped by the woman asking for the way to Kaloor and made vulgar comments in the process.

Though he tried to flee, the woman reacted promptly and forcibly pulled out the vehicle key.

The victim then alerted the police and the all-women Pink Patrol unit. Subsequently, Rajeeb was taken into custody.
