Ayyappa devotees should help stampede victims: SASS

January 31, 2011 08:46 pm | Updated 08:46 pm IST - PATHANAMTHITTA:

The Sabarimala Ayyappa Seva Samajom (SASS) has called upon Ayyappa devotees to collectively take up measures to protect the families of those who died in the stampede at Pulmedu.

In a statement here on Monday, Mr. Rajashekharan said 98 out of the 102 pilgrims who died in the stampede belonged to poor families. He alleged it was the government's neglect that led to the stampede at Pulmedu.

He said since the government had taken little effort to ensure the wellbeing of the families of the stampede victims, who came from different parts of south India, it was the duty of the Ayyappa devotees to undertake the task in right earnest.

Mr. Rajashekharan alleged that the government was the main culprit behind the Pulmedu tragedy. He called upon the government to initiate steps to conserve the Pampa.
