11 students suspended on ragging charge

February 17, 2017 08:15 pm | Updated 08:15 pm IST - KOCHI:

Eleven students of Government Polytechnic, Kalamassery, were suspended on allegations of ragging here on Friday.

The disciplinary action was taken after 14 students of the first-year batch submitted a complaint to the Principal alleging that 11 students had ragged them at the hostel. They accused their seniors of abusing them physically and mentally. The students involved in the incident were allegedly members of the Students Federation of India and they belonged to the second and third-year batches.

The Special Branch of the Kochi police started a probe after the students lodged the ragging complaint before P. Vijayan, Inspector General of Police. The college authorities said the first-year students had vacated the hostel a few weeks back stating that it lacked adequate facilities. “They had not mentioned the ragging issue till they filed a complaint this morning. We have also taken into account media reports of the ragging incident as part of the preliminary inquiry conducted by the anti-ragging council on the campus,” they said. The complaint has been forwarded to the police for follow-up action.

Four students were injured in a clash involving hostellers in the morning. Kalamassery police have registered cases against 14 students for their alleged involvement in the incident. The first-year students are also learnt to have submitted a complaint before the State Human Rights Commission.
