The Telangana government will actively consider introducing yoga lessons in school classrooms and other educational institutions, Health Minister C. Laxma Reddy said at the inaugural function of the International Yoga Day celebrations in the city on Sunday. Such a move will aid students in not just their studies but also their personal well-being, the Minister stated.
“The government is actively considering introducing schemes that ensure good health and yoga may figure on a grand scale in these programme and projects that can be broadly categorised under Arogya Telangana programme,” the Minister said.
At the inaugural function of the yoga meet organised by the State government at Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy indoor stadium at Yousufguda, around a thousand young practitioners of yoga performed guided meditation. In his inaugural address, the Minister said that yoga could be used as a preventive medical practice. “Regular yoga can prevent frequent visits to hospitals,” Mr. Reddy said.
The crowd performed ‘pranayama’ and ‘dhyana’ among other yogic rites and postures during the meet. Practitioners of Telangana Vemana Yoga Research Institute that come under the aegis of Telangana Yoga Dhyana Parishad of the State government, instructed the audience, which included the Health Minister and Jubilee Hills MLA Maganti Gopinath, among other dignitaries. The session that began at 7 a.m. sharp, went on for an hour.
Most participants in the meet were students of Hyderabad’s educational institutions. “Around 100 students from our college participated in the programme. It was a refreshing experience,” said N. Varalaxmi from JSPS Homeopathy Medical College. The meet was organised at the aegis of Union Ministry for Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani and Siddha (AYUSH). The inaugural function was followed by the planting of around 500 saplings.
