In a move to strengthen India’s relationship with Japan, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has offered 30 fully-paid scholarships for students of Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH). This was revealed at the seventh edition of IITH-Japan Collaboration Academic Fair held here on Friday. The fair was organised under JICA-Friendship Project.

“Enhancing the academia-industry network between Japan and India is one of the most important investments for both countries’ long-term friendship. In this connection, the JICA has been engaging in various initiatives with the IITH. Introducing this unique scholarship programme for students is a long-term investment. We are happy to invite talented graduates of IITH to encounter interesting research topics, cultural experiences and future opportunities in Japan,” said Katsuo Matsumoto, chief representative, JICA India.

The purpose of the fair is to introduce a clear vision of career in Japan for IITH students, including study environment, career, and life in Japan. Faculty and staff members of prestigious Japanese universities, such as the University of Tokyo, Hokkaido University, Keio University, Hiroshima University, come here to recruit IITH graduates and expect graduates for their master/doctoral programmes.

Since 2012, 91 IITH graduates – 20 masters’ students and 71 Ph.D scholars – have received scholarship to study in 14 different universities in Japan under the JICA-Friendship Project. Among these, several are currently working in famous Japanese companies and esteemed universities and research institutes.

JICA is also extending integrated support to IITH through Official Development Assistance (ODA ) loan of over ₹1,300 crore.

The fair was attended by over 200 students. IITH Director U.B. Desai was also present.
