Vice-President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu said cyber security would become a major challenge given the rapid growth in science and technology and called for out-of-the-box ideas and innovations to protect data.
“The 21st century has witnessed the emergence of disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) which has caused paradigm shifts in our way of life, but they are the most exciting technologies with a potential for endless applications. They help in solving problems and making decisions across the sectors,” he said.
Inaugurating a seminar on ‘New Paradigms in Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security’ organised by C.R. Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at University of Hyderabad, Mr. Naidu said global cyber security landscape was more challenging today with the rise in cyber crimes. “Thus, cyber security must become an essential part of our technology culture and not as an afterthought,” he said. With around 8.4 billion connected devices currently in use across the globe, the Vice-President said the traditional cyber security systems were becoming obsolete, and stressed on the need to constantly update technology, improve software and computing prowess to meet multiple challenges confronting the world.
Referring to the use of AI and ML in large enterprises, the Vice-President said, “We also have to explore the possibility of using these technologies in small and medium enterprises, small scale businesses and seasonal businesses to make the business processes more robust”.
Mr. Naidu also called for making India a global leader in modern cutting-edge technology with significant investments in research and development. India must also boost technology export and soon become a net exporter of technology.
Pointing out that India aspires to increase the economy’s size to nearly $4 trillion by 2022-23, he said technology and innovations were crucial to translate India’s growth into tangible and positive impact on the lives of people by addressing key development challenges like poverty, hunger, illiteracy and diseases. Noting that about 600 million young Indians were below 25 years of age, Mr. Naidu said these tech-savvy youngsters presented a demographic dividend and their youthful zeal and acumen must be channelised for national development. He reminded the budding researchers that the ultimate aim of science and technology was to make common man life’s happy.
Earlier, the Vice-President congratulated the C.R. Rao Institute for organising the seminar and working on important projects on cryptography, cryptoanalysis and wireless communication with a focus on AI and network security sponsored by the Government of India.
