The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Thursday said it was well on its course to complete most of the work pertaining to supply of drinking water to 190-odd habitations covering 184 villages and seven municipalities outside GHMC, but within the Outer Ring Road (ORR).

About 10 lakh population across three districts would get drinking water supply at least every alternate days within the next couple of months, said Managing Director and GHMC Commissioner M. Dana Kishore after inaugurating a photo exhibition of the work.

The project, taken up with Hudco funds, involves construction of 162 reservoirs and laying 2,200-km of pipelines, of which 62 reservoirs and 612-km of pipelines have been completed so far. Of the remaining work, 39 reservoirs would be completed by October and another 32 reservoirs by December-end. Work on others are pending due to land acquisition issues, he said.

Pipeline work

Mr. Kishore said up to 1.5 lakh new drinking water connections would likely be provided to households and ring main pipeline work would be taken up at a cost of ₹350 crore. Another ₹4,000 crore-worth ring main work has to be done and the detailed project report was ready. Proposals have been sent to the government for its approval.

Citizens living in the municipalities of Boduppal, Peerjadiguda, Balapur, Meerpet, Jalpally, Badangpet, Pedda Amberpet and in the mandals of Patancheruvu, R.C. Puram, Medchal, Quthubullapur, Shamirpet, Keesara, Ghatsekar, Hayathnagar, Ibrahimpatnam, Maheswaram, Saroornagar, Shamshabad, Rajendranagar and Jinnaram, would benefit with the work as about 30 million gallons of water a day would be supplied to them, explained Mr. Kishore.

Once the work is done in these areas, water from river Krishna, Godavari and Mjira could be transferred from one place to another easily. The water board is also preparing a master plan for a comprehensive sewerage network in these areas and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has expressed interest in funding the project.

HMWSSB Executive Director M. Sataynarayana and other senior officials were present.
