Even as a section of people are raising objection over dividing Warangal district headquarters, the government is contemplating renaming the Warangal Urban district as Hanamkonda district.
Panchayat Raj Minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao has referred to the proposal at various meetings and the government machinery appears to be taking steps to rename the district.
Parkala MLA Challa Dharma Reddy wanted Parkala revenue division to be removed from Bhupalapalli and merged with Warangal Rural.
There was a difference of opinion among the MLAs of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on the location of the district headquarters of Warangal Rural district. Every MLA wanted the district headquarters and the integrated collectorate complex in their constituency — Warangal East, Parkal and Wardhannapet.
Following the suggestion made by president of Forum for Better Warangal Sudhakar Pullur that both the districts be merged, the officials dropped their proposals for shifting the district headquarters, while the leaders left it to the decision of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
It may be recalled that the Warangal district was divided into five districts in 2016 — Warangal Rural, Warangal Urban, Jangaon, Mahabubabad and Bhupalpally. Recently after the Assembly elections, going by the public demand and promise made by the Chief Minister, a new Mulugu district, the sixth, was created.
As far as the Rural and Urban districts are concerned, there has been a difference of opinion among public. A section of them opposed bifurcating the Warangal district headquarters.
Their contention was that it would lose its historical importance. However, the government ignored the opposition to the proposal and went ahead with the proposal.
Now, the leaders want the urban district to be renamed as Hanamkonda, while the Warangal Rural district would be called Warangal.
All the public representatives from Warangal met at the residence of Mr. Dayakar Rao in Hyderabad and passed a resolution to divide Warangal and Hanamkonda as district headquarters. Warangal East MLA Nannapuneni Narender said there was consensus on the issue.
