TS Urdu Academy’s contribution to OU centenary

HYDERABAD: In what is being touted as a unique contribution, the Telangana Urdu Academy, together with the Department of Minorities Welfare is doing its bit for the centenary celebrations of the Osmania University (OU) by putting together a two-day seminar on Urdu and the varsity.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, Advisor to the State Government A.K. Khan, Secretary Syed Omer Jaleel and the Academy Director, Prof. S.A. Shukoor said that even before the holy month of Ramzan starts around May 27/28, the seminar would be held at Haritha Plaza, run by Telangana Tourism on May 22 and 23.

The two days would see 10 papers being presented, apart from the inaugural and the valedictory sessions. On Day One, the papers would be on linguistic conditions of Hyderabad State, the historical and linguistic background of the establishment of Osmania University, OU’s establishment per se, the experiment of the Urdu medium at the varsity-level and the English language, apart from OU’s cutural traditions.

May 23 would see papers on ‘Dar-Ul-Tarjuma and its phases, coining of terminology, eminent alumni of OU, changing scenario of education and the present conditions - problems and suggestions. The paper presentations would be by people of eminence, including former Vice-Chancellors, Urdu scholars and others.

The second event before Ramzan would be a grand ‘Sham-e-Ghazal’ with ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas entertaining the crowd on May 25 at the Lalitha Kala Thoranam in the pristine environs of the Public Gardens. A popular singer, Mr. Pankaj Udhas is no stranger to the City of Pearls, Mr. Omer Jaleel said, urging Urdu and ghazal-lovers to be present that evening.

Mr. Khan also shared that the focus would be entirely on promoting Urdu language and the glorious 100 years of OU. After the month of Ramzan, the Academy would organise programmes with different themes every month till April next, he said.
