Power consumers in the State are likely to face disruption of supply for the next two-three days following outage of two inter-regional links (transmission lines) – 2,000 mw Talcher-Kolar and 4,000 mw Angul-Srikakulam because of the impact of Cyclone Titli.

According to officials of the Transmission Corporation of Telangana Ltd (TS-Transco), there was a reduction of transmission of about 3,000 mw in the corridor to the Southern Region from the NEW (Northern-Eastern-Western) grid due to outage of the two inter-regional links.

“There is a possibility of control of demand to maintain the grid discipline as there is congestion in the network on account of disruption in the transmission capacity in the two inter-regional links,” Chairman and Managing Director of TS-Transco D. Prabhakar Rao said on Saturday. He sought the cooperation of consumers, stating that Telangana discoms were making all efforts to bridge the demand-supply gap.

As such, there was not much power available in the Southern Region for trading as all the southern States were starved of power due to less generation, mainly because of coal shortage both in the State and Central-generating stations, the TS-Transco grid operations officials said. They said that energy in the peak slots of 15 minutes of each was trading over ₹11.1 per unit in the Southern Region, whereas it was available for a little over ₹4 per unit in the three other regions.

Short supply in the contracted 1,000 mw power from Chhattisgarh, shortage in the generation in the Inter-State Generating Station in the region up to an additional 2,560 mw and backing out of some private producers due to high rates prevailing in the power exchange had already forced the Telangana discoms to purchase power from the exchange with high rates up to ₹10.5 per unit or more during peak hours, the officials said.

To maintain the demand-supply gap as low as possible, all the State power generating stations in Telangana were being run at their peak load, the officials said. There would be power cut for consumers till restoration of the two inter-regional transmission links, which was expected to take two to three days, the officials added.
