Policing in Telangana State capital is being taken to the next level, thanks to technology, said Hyderabad Commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar.

He said that the Facial Recognition System, a first-of-its-kind crime detection tool in the country, has helped in identification of several offenders. “This year, in 287 cases suspects’ photos were matched with FRS and it helped us in the detection of 19 separate cases,” he said. He said that Hyderabad city police is the only law enforcement agency in the country to use facial recognition software.

The software, which is now linked to TSCOP mobile phone app allows the field-level police officer to check the suspect’s face from anywhere with the criminal database and also identify the unidentified dead bodies with the police database. Further, Mr Kumar said that the city police also launched a web-based mobile app ‘Hyderabad City Police - Lost Report’ for facilitating the easy issue of police reports to the general public. With the help of this mobile app, one can directly file a report to the police without going to the police station,” he said. The data analytics unit of city police will assist the investigators in the detection of critical cases through various technological tools. A social media lab monitors online posts to resolve complaints reported on the official Facebook page, Twitter handle and WhatsApp accounts.

SHE for her

In the last one year, the SHE Teams received 5,041 complaints, out of which 1,793 were received through e-mail, while 450 were through WhatsApp. Since its launch in 2014, the SHE teams have conducted several awareness programmes on sexual abuse in various schools and colleges in the city. Mr. Kumar said that three months’ refresher training will be conducted to the police personnel from January 2 at City Armed Reserve headquarters to handle unpleasant incident on the streets.
