A digital traffic count to assess the usage of Outer Ring Road (ORR) will be taken up with round-the-clock video recording of vehicles passing through the facility for seven consecutive days.
The Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) has decided to use video-based Automatic Traffic Counter-cum-Classifier systems and cover all the entry and exit points of the 137 km ORR stretch opened for traffic. According to officials, there has been no systematic attempt so far to asses the traffic flow and calculate the number of vehicles that were using the ring road.
“By generating a continuous recording of vehicles along all the 84 toll lanes, we intend to generate data on the present traffic. It will also help us understand the potential toll collection,” said an official, not wishing to be identified. The initiative drawn up by the HGCL involves having a video camera in each of the lanes, recording the image of every vehicle passing through for classification with a date and time stamp while another camera would be focussed for automatic number plate recognition. The images generated will be processed to analyse the hourly traffic in real time, the official said. “We will have hourly classification of vehicles i.e., how many cars, trucks, buses and so on are entering and exiting the ORR, along with images of number plates,” he said.
The traffic survey will cover all the lanes at 19 interchanges on the ORR stretch between Ghatkesar and Shamirpet via Pedda Amberpet, Shamshabad, Narsingi, Nanakramguda, Patancheru and Medchal.
