Surrogacy centre raided

June 24, 2017 01:00 am | Updated 01:00 am IST - HYDERABAD

Health officials of Yadadri district raided an infertility facility and found surrogate mothers holed up at the centre. The raid on the facility in Bhongir comes days after a similar such raid on a clinic in Banjara Hills. Sources said the Bhongir facility was using surrogates for not just Indian parents but also foreigners. The clinic has been in news in the past for violations. Health officials who raided the facility also seized documents but did not shut down the facility. No police cases were registered as no law exists to regulate surrogacy in the country.

Following the raids on the clinic in Banjara Hills, the Hyderabad district health administration sought explanation from the clinic management to explain alleged discrepancies in the permits and also seized scanning equipment. However, the pregnant women both in Hyderabad and Bhongir were allowed to stay at the clinics provided the clinic managements do not take up new cases before being cleared to operate again.
