Dozens of students comprising the inmates of several State-run hostels from various parts of the district took to the streets here on Wednesday demanding urgent steps to resolve the problems faced by them and ensure timely provision of mess and cosmetic charges.

The agitated students took out a rally from Pavilion Grounds to ZP Centre under the banner of PDSU district committee.

They displayed placards highlighting their woes such as lack of adequate toilets and other basic amenities in the State-run as well as student-managed hostels in several mandals of the district. They staged a sit-in at Dharna Chowk to press their charter of demands.

Addressing the dharna, the PDSU activists alleged that the inmates of several State-run hostels were reeling under a plethora of problems, mainly inadequate toilets, inordinate delay in payment of mess and cosmetic charges and short supply of blankets in the current winter season.

They demanded that the State government resolve their problems and increase mess as well as cosmetic charges in view of sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities.

They wanted the authorities to organise medical camps in all the hostels regularly to cater to the healthcare needs of the students.

Hostels neglected

NIZAMABAD Special Correspondent adds: Students under the banner of Progressive Democratic Students’ Union (PDSU) staged a protest dharna demanding immediate release of mess and cosmetic charges, which have been pending for several months now.

PDSU district president Ch. Kalpana, who led the protest rally, said social welfare hostels were beset with several problems. Wardens were unable to improve food quality and the condition of the hostels with the government being negligent in solving them.

“There are no basic amenities such as toilets and bathrooms,” she said.

Ms. Kalpana also demanded that the government fill the vacant warden posts, supply medical kits to girls’ hostels regularly, construct compound walls around hostels, pay wages to tutors and supply footwear, clothes and bed sheets to students.
