A servant made off with ₹ 12 lakh along with gold jewellery and electronic goods worth ₹ 13 lakh from his master’s house in Bowenpally but fled after abandoning the cash and property at Kharagpur railway station on seeing the police there.

A businessman Sandesh Soni living in Manovikasnagar and his family left for Puri on pilgrimage on May 13 directing the maid Deepak Bera, 27, to look after the house. Bera of West Bengal had been working in their house for the past seven months.

A day after they left, Bera who was given accommodation in a room of the house removed the grill and entered the other rooms of the house. He broke open almirahs, collected the cash, gold ornaments and electronic goods, live surveillance cameras, TV and laptop.

Carrying the booty in a bag, he boarded a train for his village. When the train stopped at Kharagpur railway station, the railway policemen grew suspicious about his movements. On seeing the approaching policemen, Bera got worried, since he was carrying the bag with stolen goods. He abandoned the bag at the railway station and left the place evading the police. “The Kharagpur railway police found the bag and traced the owner through a card with the businessman’s phone number in the bag. They called him and asked about the bag and articles,” Bowenpally Inspector G. Sridhar said. The businessman called up his servant but the latter had switched off his phone.

They returned to city on Thursday. After checking the house, they realised that Bera burgled the house and fled but fortunately the entire property with cash was found intact at Kharagpur railway station.
