The general body meeting of the Zilla Parishad held here on Monday presided by chairperson Rajamani Murali Yadav witnessed a volley of arguments between the ruling party and the Opposition on various issues.

Collectors Vasam Venkateswarlu (Sangareddy) and Dharma Reddy (Medak), MP K. Prabhakar Reddy, government whip in Council P. Sudhakar Reddy, MLC V. Bhoopal Reddy, MLAs Chinta Prabhakar, M. Bhupal Reddy, G. Mahipal Reddy and P. Babumohan attended the meeting.

Soon after the meeting commenced, Sadashivapet ZPTC member Sangameswar raised the issue of supplying drinking water, stating that work on overhead tanks were already completed. This led to arguments and counter-arguments between both the sections. Intervening, Mr. Venkateswarlu said Mission Bhagiratha would address the drinking water problem. He said bulk of the water supply work would be completed by April or May, which would be followed by intra-grid works by July or August.

Responding to the discussion on the pollution being faced by people at several places, Mr. Chinta Prabhakar suggested a special meeting with the representatives of Patancheru constituency, where the pollution is highest. The Collector promised to hold a meeting shortly. One of the members alleged that burning of tyres had become a serious problem in Kondapur and other areas. The problem persisted even in Gajwel constituency, which is represented by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, the member said.

When members asked about the compensation to cotton farmers who lost their crop due to spurious seed, the officials said they could not force the company to pay the compensation, adding that the company has been contemplating the legal route.

The members also pointed out the forgotten promise to farmers who lost their crop due to the Manjeera river flood two years ago. Congress member Sanjeeva Reddy alleged that the water in river Manjeera has been fast drying up due to diversion of water to Ghanapur and Nizamsagar.
