‘Journalists are being asked to take sides’

Every journalist should safeguard their integrity to be better at their job, said senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai at a talk given at the Press Club of Hyderabad here on Sunday.

Journalism in the Country faces several challenges including corrupt content, misuse of technology, lack of credibility and faulty business model of news production apart from lacking journalists with integrity, Mr. Sardesai pointed out while speaking about CobraPost sting operation that exposed alleged involvement of media house owners and marketing wings in planting paid news.

Speaking to journalists in the city, Mr. Sardesai said, “We have to change what is considered news. Even good news is news. We should help build a better India”.

Criticising news broadcasters who “do not inform people but divide people”, he said the cheapest way of broadcasting news is to hold debates in studios, Mr. Sardesai said, adding news should focus on “education, health, environment, science and technology”. News currently is being used to polarise the country, Mr. Sardesai opined.

Journalists should be objective, but presently journalists are being asked to take sides, Mr. Sardesai said. “Future of journalism will survive only if philanthropists contribute money for good journalism,” he added. Mr. Sardesai also awarded photojournalists working in regional and national dailies based out of Telangana.
