When over three hundred villagers and a few policemen did not dare to get into
an abandoned well to rescue a 50-year-old ‘hunter’ who accidentally fell into it, a head constable from Shamshabad police station saved the person trapped there.
On learning that an elderly person fell into the well located on the outskirts of Pedda Shapur village, head constable Krishnama Chary, who was on patrol duty, rushed to the spot.
“Yes, it was scary to get into the big well, which was covered with plants, but my ‘self-assigned’ task was to rescue the man who was battling for life down there,” Mr. Chary told The Hindu .
Around 5 p.m. Mr Chary received a call from a villager that there was some trouble. He rushed to the spot and decided to get into the well, without waiting for any instructions from his superiors.
Mr. Chary asked his colleagues and villagers to get the ropes and join him in the rescue effort. Holding onto it, the head constable climbed down into the well, while home guard Srisailam and other people held it tight at the top.
“As I got down, the bird hunter Dasari Chandraiah (50) of Pedda Shapur was wailing with pain and was in dire need of medication,” he said.
Soon, other officers of the Shamshabad division reached the spot and, with the help of a crane suspended by a harness, both Chandraiah and Chary were brought out.
“I felt that my decision of entering the well was right at that time. It was a momentous decision,” Mr. Chary said, adding that the well was almost 150 feet deep and it was a four-hour-long operation.
According to Shamshabad Inspector R Venkatesh, Chandraiah who was on a hunt for rabbits and birds failed to notice the well and fell into it. “He suffered rib fractures and is being treated at Osmania General Hospital,” the officer added.
