There was mild panic at the high security US Consulate in Begumpet when the weapon of a police constable posted there, went off on Wednesday evening, resulting in grievous injuries to him.

The police said Narasimha Swamy (23) hailing from Nalgonda district was on a sentry duty at gate number one at the consulate office for the past one month. A head constable and four constables, including Swamy were posted at the office. In the evening, constables in the waiting room heard a loud sound and rushed to the main gate only to find Swamy with a chest injury and his self-loading rifle lying beside him.

They rushed him to a hospital where his condition is stated to be serious, said Begumpet Inspector G. Basava Reddy.

“We cannot rule out the possibility of the constable trying to shoot himself,” said Mr. Reddy.
