The decision of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on providing two bins for each household to ensure segregation of garbage at source, would mean procuring and distributing 45 lakh dust bins in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) jurisdiction.
During the recent Swachh Hyderabad initiative, the Chief Minister has announced that each household in the city would be given two bins, one for wet garbage and another for dry, in the next couple of months.
The committee of elected representatives constituted for GHMC affairs, in its short-term recommendations has suggested taking up the proposal on pilot basis in few colonies and expand to other areas based on results. In the medium-term recommendations, it called for distribution of 45 lakh bins after building up proper awareness and motivation on segregation of waste at source among the citizens.
The committee took a critical view of the present garbage disposal practises in the city and noted that no segregation was taken up household level, transportation facility was inadequate and there was a lack of garbage transfer stations. It also highlighted that the civic body was using an old fleet of 145 sanitation vehicles which was more than 15 years old and plagued with frequent repairs and breakdowns apart from complaints on misuse of diesel.
The recommendations by the committee that comprise MPs, MLAs and MLCs apart from Ministers, N. Narasimha Reddy and T. Padma Rao, suggested setting up compound walls for vacant plots to prevent them from turning into garbage dumping points and having special arrangements to collect and dispose waste from eateries, hotels and restaurants on payment.
In place of the present 12 garbage transfer stations that were not proper, the civic body was asked to come up with 25 mechanised stations in various parts with closed, protected and controlled system. For collection of garbage at doorsteps, deploying a fleet of 2,500 auto tippers was also sought.
