The National Backward Classes Commission has to review the Backward Classes (BCs) in the country and can suggest to the Union government deletion of some existing communities from the list, said Justice V. Eshwaraiah, former chairman of the BC Commission, on Monday.
In fact, the Union Ministry of Social Justice had been asking the Commission to undertake review of BCs in the country. However, such review would be possible only if data of all other communities was made available, he observed.
Appreciating the Centre’s decision to undertake census of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the country for the first time, the former judge said that people have a perception that details of the census conducted every 10 years are not made available to them for years together.
“The 2012 census may begin now but it would not be available to them till 2025. With the available modern technology and resources, such delay should not be there,” he said. Referring to the Samagra Kutumba Survey carried out by the State, he said the government proved that such exercise can be completed in a short span of time.
It was a different issue that the government didn’t want to share the survey details with its people, he said. He stressed the need for comparative studies of different communities in the country to extend government help for their advancement. Justice Eshwaraiah felt such studies would help in deletion of the well-off from the list and extend benefits to more deserving communities among BCs.
