Nursery student dies in school lift

In a tragic incident, a Nursery student died after getting stuck in an elevator at a private school in Dilsukhnagar here on Tuesday morning. Soon after the incident, the school authorities fled from the school premises fearing an attack by the relatives of the child.

Four-year-old Syed Xainab Fatima Jaffery of Saidabad was studying in Sri Chaitanya’s Star Kids School at Gaddianaram in Dilsukhnagar. The child left her house along with her cousin who also studies in the same class at around 8.30 a.m. by the school bus. At about 9.45, the grandfather of the girl, S. H. Zaida received a phone call from the school authorities asking the family to rush to the school.

“When we reached, we found Fatima’s head trapped in the lift. No one from the school bothered to explain what had happened. The police were on the spot and were trying to rescue the girl,” S.H. Zaida explained. After a few minutes, some persons from the ground floor managed to lift the elevator with the help of crowbars and pull her out.

The school is run in a three-storied building and Fatima’s class is situated on the first floor of the premises. “A lady teacher took around 8 to 10 students in the lift. It is not clear how the girl slipped and got stuck in the lift. We are investigating,” Inspector Malakpet, A Ganga Reddy told The Hindu.

The police said that there are no closed circuit television cameras installed on the school premises. However, a few parents told police that the school management had recently installed cameras and could have removed it after the incident.

Tension prevailed in the area as a crowd gathered at the school and raised slogans against the school management.
