Telangana became the first State in the country to have a live electronic exchange of data between the courts and the police, as Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) chairman and Supreme Court Judge Justice Madan B. Lokur, launched it through video conferencing from Delhi on Saturday.
The project was started on a pilot basis in Subedari police station of Warangal Commissionerate.
Soon after the launch, a demo of live exchange of data between the police and the courts took place in which details of FIR and chargesheet were transferred electronically in real time, and the court has issued the receipt with the reference number online.
During the inaugural address, Justice Lokur said convergence of information between police, courts, prisons, forensics and prosecutions will eventually speed up the process of criminal justice system. The status of each case and its monitoring becomes easier for the police and judicial officers. Electronic transfer of data will reduce the burden on courts significantly, he said.
Justice Lokur said Telangana police has made tremendous progress in IT, hence the pilot project was launched in Warangal district. “Gradually, it’ll be scaled up and expanded to the whole State,” he said.
Chief Justice of High Court of Judicature, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Justice T. N. Radhakrishnan said that the electronic exchange of data between the courts and the police will improve the system of justice delivery and help provide justice to citizens expeditiously.
DGP M. Mahender Reddy said the project will eliminate redundant data entry, bring transparency and accountability among police, prosecution and judicial system.
He said police-citizen interface will undergo a major shift with the implementation of this project.
