Twin cities are finally going to have modern traffic lights soon with Bharath Electronics Limited (BEL), a Government of India undertaking, bagging the Rs.63.6 crore project to install 220 modern traffic signals in the GHMC area.

A committee of senior officials have announced the successful bidder on Tuesday and the project is expected to be rolled in a couple of months. GHMC in association with the A.P. Technology Services (APTS) has floated the tender for supply of traffic signal hardware, networking, installation, commissioning, maintenance and operations of the Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System (H-TRIMS) project for Hyderabad traffic police for a period of five years.
CMS and Keltron were the other bidders for the project. The panel which approved the bids looked into the technical and financial aspects of the bids.
There is also a provision for adding more signals during the period.
Senior officials said that traffic commanding centres will be located in – traffic control room at Basheerbagh and the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate at Serilingampally.
LEDs
There are about 182-odd traffic signals in Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Cyberabad currently with some of them being transformed into modern Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). BEL has to complete the project in 12 months and once completed the city's traffic signalling will be on par with New Delhi and Mumbai.
