The CPI(M) and its frontal organisations are gearing up to hold dharnas in the mandal headquarters across the district from July 8 to 12 to press for urgent steps to uphold the legitimate rights of tribals guaranteed under the Scheduled Tribes and the Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006.

The CPI (M) affiliated Telangana Rythu Sangham, the Telangana Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham (TVKS) and the Girijana Sangham have chalked out an action plan to highlight the long pending issues of “podu cultivators” and mount pressure on the government TO address them immediately.

Speaking to The Hindu , TVKS senior leader Macha Venkateswarlu said the government should take urgent steps to grant pattas to all the eligible tribal people in possession of the forest lands before the stipulated RoFR cut-off date (December 13, 2005) as per the provisions of the Act.

He demanded that the TRS dispensation fulfil its pre-poll promise to resolve the long pending "podu land" issues.

The persons at the helm should desist from “coercive measures” against podu cultivators and strive to uphold the rights of tribal people as enshrined in the RoFR Act, he added.

Mandal-level dharnas will be held from July 8-12 across the district over the issues of podu cultivators and press for investment support to all podu farmers, he said.
