For Miru and Uzair Hassan, students of the Gaudium School here at the mandal headquarters, it’s been a different learning experience on Saturday, muddying their hands.
They are part of the group of students in the school growing organic vegetables like brinjal, cauliflower, cabbage, lady finger, bitter gourd, ridge gourd and other crops in a kitchen garden a few metres away from the main campus. Anemoni Tirupatiah, a B.Sc. Agriculture graduate, has been guiding the students in preparing the soil, sowing the seeds and supplying organic nutrients.
Students of all classes have been participating, in batches, in the cultivation of vegetable crops in a quarter-acre space allotted for this purpose. Not only that, the produce from this farm is being sold to the school staff on every Friday.
Material from waste
Class 9 students Abhijit and Aarnav, got the experience of farming for the first time in the life. They turned into ‘small-time farmers’ selling their produce in the ‘Farmers Market 2018’ on the school premises on Saturday.
Students have also showcased their talent in preparing material from waste. This included face masks, paper flowers, wall hangers, coasters, lamps, cups, pen holders, photo frames and some other exhibits.
“This is a great experience for us. We will know how to prepare the soil, sow seed and grow plants,” said Uzair Hassan.
Large number of students and parents were present at the Farmers Market. Different programmes were held on the occasion, and camel and horse rides to the students were an added attraction.
