The Lakkaram tank of Kakatiya period here has received a new lease of life following near total restoration of the water body at an estimated cost of Rs 13.5 crore under the Mission Kakatiya scheme.
The actual storage area of the historic tank dug up during the reign of the Kakatiya dynasty had shrunk drastically due to encroachments on a vast stretch of the tank bed in the past few decades.
The Telangana Government has included the tank under its ambitious tank restoration project to rejuvenate the water body over two years ago.
Subsequently, the desilting work were carried out and the weirs and feeder channels were repaired as part of the restoration project, official sources said.
The executing agencies have expedited the process of completion of the left-over work, including erection of concrete guide walls to rejuvenate the water body fully.
The process of filling up the tank with Krishna water from the NSP left canal has already begun.
Efforts are on to fully restore the historic Lakkaram water tank to its original glory and develop the site into a major recreation centre, said Khammam MLA Puvvada Ajay Kumar.
A plan is on the anvil to implement a beautification project, envisaging construction of a mini-tank bund and walking track abutting the tank, he said, adding the funds earmarked for the development work in Khammam Municipal Corporation will be utilised for this purpose.
